Ashley Cole: Former Chelsea defender worth 'gamble'

LA Galaxy head coach Bruce Arena believes Ashley Cole is worth a gamble after signing the former Chelsea and England left-back.

Cole, 35, will link up with former international team-mate Steven Gerrard after the defender's contract with Roma was terminated by mutual consent.

Cole joined the Italian Serie A side in July 2014 and made 16 appearances.

"Whether you think it's a risk or a gamble, these are the risks and gambles that you take," said Arena.

Capped 107 times, Cole has won three Premier Leagues, seven FA Cups, one Champions League and one Europa League.

Roma sacked manager Rudi Garcia, 51, on 13 January after a period in which he won just one match since the beginning of November.

"Ashley Cole has a great history," added Arena.

"We know that doesn't necessarily translate on the field when you come to Major League Soccer, but my interactions over the last couple of months show me he's a player that has a strong desire to play here in Los Angeles.

"He's very fit and has a burning desire to get back on the field and prove to people he can still play.

"I have a hard time believing he won't be one of the better left-backs in our league."

AC Milan among 35 Italian clubs under investigation by tax police

An investigation into alleged tax evasion by 35 clubs in Italy's top two divisions is taking place.

The country's finance police are executing search warrants as they carry out asset seizures to the reported value of 12m euros (£9.1m).

The case involves 58 people involved in professional football, a Naples prosecutor said in a statement.

Lawyers for AC Milan said vice president Adriano Galliani was among those under investigation.

In a statement on the club's website, the lawyers dismissed the allegations as unfounded and said they expected the case to be dismissed.

The investigation, dubbed 'Fuorigioco' (Offside), is believed to concern allegations of falsifying player transactions.

Andros Townsend: Newcastle agree fee with Tottenham

Newcastle have agreed a fee, believed to be about £12m, to sign Tottenham's England winger Andros Townsend.

The 24-year-old has made just three substitute appearances in the Premier League this season.

Andros Townsend tweeted an image of him leaving the club's training ground on Tuesday

Townsend - who has played 10 times for England - was dropped for a Europa League match in November after a row with fitness coach Nathan Gardiner.

Newcastle have already signed midfieldersJonjo Shelvey and Henri Saivet in this transfer window.

Townsend joined the Tottenham academy aged eight but did not become a first-team regular until the start of the 2013-14 season, by which time he had been sent out on nine separate loan spells.

This season, though, he has only started three games - two in the Europa League and the Capital One Cup defeat by Arsenal.

He appeared to confirm that he was leaving Tottenham on Tuesday afternoon, tweeting a picture of him leaving the club's training ground

Emmanuel Adebayor: Crystal Palace sign striker on free transfer

Crystal Palace have signed striker Emmanuel Adebayor on a free transfer until the end of the season.

Adebayor, 31, was available after being released by Tottenham in September and has scored 94 Premier League goals for Spurs, Arsenal and Manchester City.

Two weeks ago, Palace boss Alan Pardew confirmed his interest in signing the Togo international.

Adebayor's last appearance came on 3 May 2015, playing six minutes inSpurs's 1-0 home defeat by Man City.

Palace are the third-joint lowest scorers in the league with 24 goals in 23 games this season, and lie 11th in the table.

Strikers Fraizer Campbell, Dwight Gayle, Connor Wickham and Marouane Chamakh have managed just one league goal between them so far.

Jurgen Klopp: Liverpool boss 'did not watch Stoke penalty shootout'

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said he did not see any of the penalty shootout against Stoke City that took his side to Wembley for the Capital One Cup final - but has set his sights on lifting his first trophy since arriving at Anfield.

The Reds triumphed 6-5 on penalties after Stoke won 1-0 over 120 minutes - courtesy of Marko Arnautovic's goal from an apparently offside position just before half-time - to claw back a semi-final first-leg deficit.

However, Reds goalkeeper Simon Mignolet made decisive saves from Peter Crouch and Marc Muniesa in the spot-kicks.

Klopp said: "I didn't see one shot. I was behind the wall of my players so I had to watch it from there. I will watch it on television at home but it was good watching the crowd instead."

Liverpool will face Manchester City or Merseyside neighbours Everton in the final on 28 February, and Klopp said: "It is very important. I saw that in the faces of my players.

"Being in the final is good but the important thing is to win. Their goal was double offside but we got some luck in the penalties.

"Now we will watch the game between Everton and Manchester City. It will be a north of England final. Wembley is a cool place to play football but we go there to win - it's not much fun to lose."

Everton hold a 2-1 advantage over Manchester City beforeWednesday's second leg at the Etihad and Klopp would relish an all-Merseyside final.

Chelsea's Ramires joins Jiangsu Suning in £25m move

Chelsea's Ramires has joined Chinese side Jiangsu Suning in a deal believed to be worth about £25m.

The 28-year-old Brazil midfielder agreed a new four-year deal in October but has only started seven Premier League games this season.

Jiangsu finished ninth in China's top tier in 2015 and are managed by former Blues defender Dan Petrescu.

Ramires has helped the Blues win the Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup, Champions League and Europa League.

In total he made 251 appearances for Chelsea, scoring 34 goals, after joining from Benfica for about £17m in 2010.
